Three Oasis 500 startups nominated as finalists in Bank al Etihad first’s ‘Annual SME Awards: Madfoo3atkom selected as best SME
As the premier provider of banking tools and facilities that enable entrepreneurs to establish and sustain new projects, Bank al Etihad launched the first ‘Annual SME Awards’ on November 18 in its efforts to support entrepreneurship and celebrate the accomplishments of SMEs in Jordan. The winners were selected following a transparent and rigorous evaluation process based on four criteria including: Financial Strength, Sustainability, Creativity and Social Impact.
Under the three categories of ‘Best SME’, ‘Businesswoman of the Year’, and ‘Best Startup’, an Oasis500 company was nominated for each category. Selected Oasis 500 companies were Little Thinking Minds founded by Rama Kayyali; Ekeif founded by Sima Najjar and Madfoo3atCom founded by Nasser Saleh.
Under the category of ‘Best SME’ Madfoo3atCom was a winning company, receiving a monetary prize of JOD 25,000, as well as professional mentorship and financial guidance from the Bank al Etihad team. Gaugez secures $100k USD from Third Party Investors
Gaugez, a comprehensive online resource of automotive vehicles that provides free services such as comparative sales and shopping tools, as well as advice and information from industry leaders, have successfully raised funds from a third party investor totaling $100,000 USD for expansion and scale. The success of Gaugez in raising funds is a showcase for the incredible entrepreneurship spirit that MENA tech entrepreneurs embody. It validates the acceleration process at Oasis 500 in which investors are willing to commit to Oasis 500 startups.
MediRevu selected as finalist to pitch at the World Entrepreneurship Forum in Lyon
MediRevu was one of five finalists to pitch at the World Entrepreneurship Forum in Lyon, France on October 21. MediRevu was the youngest startup selected alongside four other ambitious startups – NovaNano, Imona Cloud, IzzyBike and Numoni. The founders of MediRevu presented the project for crowd-funding before a six-member CrowdDen VC panel of well-known names in the angel investment world. This was a great opportunity for MediRevu to be showcased on the world stage alongside four start-ups with amazing track records and awards under their belt.
Project Pen getting traction and fostering partnerships
Project Pen signed a content-creation deal with Curlstone studios for $21K USD bringing the company’s total revenue since May 2014 to over $30K USD. Within three weeks of launch, projectpen.com is receiving almost 1000 hits a day, with average session duration of over 2 minutes.
The company is testing out a syndication deal for project pen MENA creativity blog and creative commons stories with Al Bawaba Syndicate, the largest syndication platform in MENA, and they are also content-sharing with Barakabits.
Their first book, “Jamila’s Thread,” was sent out for print publication in Lebanon in November. The book is a wholly project pen intellectual property, which will be used to test distribution supply-chains and licensing opportunities in MENA.
Waraq signs partnership agreement with UAE’s most distinguished publishing house
Blueprint Media’s first Middle East’s dedicated digital newsstand Waraq has signed two partnership agreements with the Creative Action Network (CAN), a global marketplace for meaningful artwork merchandise and apparel, and with BNC publishing, one of the UAE’s most distinguished publishing and media houses.
Such partnerships provide Waraq a valuable market advantage. It is now CAN’s digital distribution and merchandising partner in the MENA region, where through this partnership 50 books have been digitally distributed. It is also the distributor of BNC’s titles including Entrepreneur Middle East, Entrepreneur Qatar, Entrepreneur Arabic, Hotel News and Logistics News.
Waraq is also involved in the “Recovering the Classics” campaign, which has created an opportunity for designers and illustrators to rethink the designs of 50 iconic Arabic literary works and create new cover art. In line with this campaign, Waraq is hosting a competition to choose the most relevant and creative artworks to be featured on the “recovered” eBooks, on Waraq’s newsstand and the covers of a limited edition print run.
Feesheh wins 1st place at Seedstars World in Jordan, and expands its operations into the UAE
Feesheh.com, an online store offering accessibility and competitive prices on musical instruments in the Arab World and on oriental instruments globally, expands its operations into the UAE after receiving an investment from the Silicon Oasis Founders, owned by Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority. The founders Nur Alfayez and Fahed Farraj are now ready to move their operations from Jordan and target a bigger regional market.
Feesheh has had several victories this year. They have recently won 1st place at Seedstars World in Jordan, which will be taking them to Switzerland in February 2015 as they pitch to a panel of European investors, and they have caught the attention of several international investors including Future Entertainment Works Company and other angel investors in the GCC. Additionally, they have been selected to be part of 500 Startups 10th accelerator batch in San Francisco, where they will receive investment and 3 months acceleration.
